Spring cleaning can quickly become an overwhelming task. There is so much that you want to accomplish, and you want to get it all done before your kids are out of school. Instead of getting buried in the tasks ahead of you, learn the most efficient way to clean out your home this spring.

Conquer One Task Or One Room At A Time

Whether you have a small apartment or a large home, it is not fun trying to get the entire place cleaned at once. Decide whether it makes more sense to tackle one room at a time or to focus on specific tasks each day, such as washing all of the linens or dusting all of the light fixtures. Once you’ve divvied up the tasks or rooms, make a schedule to pace yourself, setting aside a certain amount of time each day or each weekend.

Go Through All Of Your Belongings

The start of a new season is the perfect time to get rid of anything that you haven’t used in the past year. You don’t have to get rid of everything, but you should look through all of your seasonal clothing and household items at least once. If there are clothing items that are worn out, get rid of them. Make a pile of clothes that are still in good shape but that kids have outgrown or no longer wear, and donate them to a local charity.

Wash The Linens And Flip The Mattress

It is recommended to flip your mattress every few months. As such, the beginning of the new season is a good time to take care of this task. In addition to flipping it, you should also rotate the head and foot positions to help it keep its shape. Set the vacuum to a low level and use the attachment to clear out dust and debris. Are there odours on the mattress? Deodorise the mattress with a dusting of baking soda. Let it sit for a few minutes before brushing it off and running the vacuum one more time.

Then launder all of the linens and bedding including the pillows, duvets, and quilts. If your washing machine isn’t large enough for duvets or comforters, take them to the nearest laundromat.

Freshen Curtains And Window Treatments

Regular curtain and window treatment cleaning prevents the fabric and other materials from rotting. Take down and wash all fabric window treatments that you can put in the washing machine, including cotton and similar textiles. Make sure that you take out any hooks first. Dry-clean velvet, brocades, tapestries, chenille, and interlined curtains. If you have wooden blinds, set a hair dryer on cool to blow the dust off. Then treat the slats with non-wax furniture polish, wiping them down with your fingers while wearing soft cotton gloves.

Wash The Windows

Take a vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the interior panes, screens, sills, and window frames. Attack the corners with a dust brush and crevice attachment. Then use a squeegee with a sponge attachment for the glass. Start at the top right corner and drag the squeegee to the left, drying the scraper after each pass.

Dust The Appliances And Light Fixtures

Turn off the lights and take off shades, bulbs, and globes so that you can clean them properly. Clean light bulbs offer more light for the same amount of money. Use regular dish soap for the removable components. Take a damp cloth and wipe down the fixed parts.

Spring is also an ideal time to move the refrigerator so that you can clean behind and underneath it. When dust builds up on the cooling coils, it runs less efficiently. Before you unplug the refrigerator, remove all of the contents, throwing out old items and placing good items in a cooler. Wipe down the shelves and walls with a tablespoon of baking soda mixed into one quart of warm water. Vacuum up the dirt around the refrigerator, and clean the gaskets.
